Backpack Buddies invites public to meet, help

Backpack Buddies, an Erath County volunteer group dedicated to fighting child hunger, is inviting the public to an open meeting set tomorrow (June 22) at 11:30 a.m. in the Executive Board Room at the Stephenville ISD Admin office (2566 W. Overhill).

The group is making one of its missions for the coming year to get a stronger presence in Dublin, although they have been serving Dublin children for several years with 50 getting weekend meals to take home during the 2016-17 school year.

“We were providing weekend meals for 270 Erath County children [in the spring],” said volunteer Shelby Slawson, who indicated the need is probably much greater than that. “That’s a fraction of the number of kids on free and reduced lunches."

“There’s always a need for more people,” Slawson said, adding that more volunteers make the workload easier for all volunteers.

Opportunities are available in many tasks including food truck unloading and package sorting, delivery from the Stephenville pantry to local schools and correspondence.

Anyone interested in learning more can visit the June 22 meeting or call Sena at (512) 966-7788 or Shelby at 592-4909.
