Mendez named full-time Police Chief
The Dublin City Council unanimously voted to promote interim Police Chief Bobby Mendez to the full position following an executive session in Monday night’s regular meeting. The extension provided the same annual salary to Mendez as former Dublin Police Chief Michael Jennings.
The council also discussed the positions of Public Works Director Cory James and City Secretary Rhonda Willims in the executive session and approved raises for the longtime employees provided the finance committee can find the funds.
The meeting also addressed the rededication of the firehouse in honor of James Fritts, as well as lifeguards and treatment at the City Pool.
In regular reports, council member John Johnson presented the decision of the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department in how to honor the late, lifelong fire chief. Recognizing the man wouldn’t have wanted his name in huge letters on the station, they instead proposed renaming the facility “Station No. 17” after Fritts’ call sign. The proposal requested a metal plaque with verbiage that explained the significance of the name and wording over the meeting room door, dubbing it Fritts Hall.
“I think that’s the right way to go,” Dublin Mayor David Leatherwood said.
The dedication will happen next month in conjunction with an open house.
